This is the first release by
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is actually a bootleg (rumoured to have been put
out by Siltbreeze Records) and one of the many alternate
versions of their first album. This release has an alternate track listing,
running order and the tracks are mixed (slightly) different compared to the authorised
releases on Crypt, Caroline
and Hut.
The following is an extract from an interview
from 'Vertigozine.co.uk': "The Blues Explosion's very first sessions have already
been immortalised on vinyl bootleg (before their
first official album was out) which documents the original studio session
as engineered by New York's most famed producer, Kramer (Ex-Butthole Surfers, Bongwater
and founder of the Shimmydisc label) and their second session which was presided
over by Steve Albini (ex-Big Black/top producer/all round bitch.) According to Blues Explosion drummer
Russell Simins and guitarist Judah Bauer, the Kramer session took
just two and a half to three hours in which they recorded fourteen songs, only doing
second takes here and there. "The thing is that on some of that stuff, that three
hours of rock mixes, we didn't even go to the mixing board. That's all on record:
that bootleg - 'A Reverse Willie Horton'." - vertigozine.co.uk/3_jsbe.php
Support A Man, White Tail and Type Cast
all feature false starts.
Although other sources have suggested that You Gonna Change is not on this album it is definitely there.
It looks as though there are only six songs on side B as there is no gap between '78 Style and You
Gonna Change. '78 Style lasts 1:26 and has an abrupt ending
which is immediately followed by the abrupt start of You Gonna
Change. These songs
are also next to each other on Jon Spencer Blues Explosion but there is a visual
space on the vinyl and CD tracks change at the right point.
You Gonna Change was titled Changed on The Jon Spencer
Blues Explosion.
A1. is titled Twenty-9 on rear sleeve, Twenty Nine
on label and Twentynine
on Crypt Style (CD, JAPAN).
This recording of the track is a completely different and features an alternate
intro to the one released on Crypt Style.
Type Cast was to appear as Soul Typecast on Extra Width
but all other tracks were featured across Crypt Style
and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.
40lb Block of Cheese is indexed as two tracks on the vinyl.
Album closes with Jon Spencer saying "That's all we have time for, ladies and gentlemen
we have to go, we have to go, thank you. That's all we have time for, good night".
Most of these songs appeared on either Crypt Style
or Jon Spencer Blues Explosion but all have slightly different running orders and tracklistings.
