Comet Gain sleeve notes by Daniel T.
So anyway, there’s me and me new flatmates Roger Daltry and Rick Buckler, and we’re down the Arndale Centre, getting a few bibs and bobs together for the new pad, when Roger’s eyes lit up. “Strewth! Look at the lovely varied display of gloss and emulsion paints!” exclaimed Roger.
“That’s right Roger mate!” said Rick, the modestly unassuming ex-Jam drummer excitedly. “There really is quite a choice!”
“It beats me,” said Dan in some awe. “How on earth do DO IT ALL do it for what they do it for? Cos I’ve no idea!”
“That’s right,” agreed Rick. “That’s exactly what the bloke at Texas Homecare said, ‘if only we knew it, how DO IT ALL do it, don’t you think we’d be doing it as well?'”
“Bloody Nora!” gasped Rick suddenly. “We ain’t gonna get to Safeways at this rate!”
“Hmm,” said Roger, the veteran rock frontman. “Well I’ve got a nice piece of trout for my nosh bag… ‘andsome mate!”
So then, the very next day in the Rough Trade Shop…
“Daniel!” beamed Delia. “Hello lovely!”
“Hello sweetheart!” said the ageing indie pop icon. “I didn’t think you were working today, what a lovely surprise!”
“Hiya doll!” said Roger the bronzed rock legend, charisma working overtime. “How’s about a little kiss for your Uncle Roger?… ‘andsome!”
Poor Delia squirmed with embarrassment but quickly regained her womanly composure. “Daniel,” she started, “Have you heard the new Comet Gain l.p.?”
“You mean the debut long player by those up and coming young soul rebels?” said Daniel excitedly. “Crikey Delia, you must be psychic! I was just going to ask you the same question!”
“Isn’t it great?” chirruped Delia.
“Yes,” said the influential singer/songwriter. “It really is an exciting new sound that I’m sure the kids at the club will dig!”
“It just goes to show,” chipped in the agreeable Rick. “Low budget doesn’t have to mean low quality.”
“It only we knew it, how Comet Gain do it!” guffawed Roger, ever the joker.
“Mark my words,” said Daniel in all seriousness. “Top 40, straight in!”
“With a bullet,” laughed Roger. “…Bleeding ‘andsome mate!”
The End
P.S. Dear David,
I hope these sleeve notes will be alright for your l.p. In all seriousness though mate, if you keep practising regularly, and, this is just a little tip between ourselves, give a little more thought to your stagewear, you could go gar in the business …and it won’t be undeserved either old son, just don’t make the same mistakes I did!
Wishing you every success.
