Last Night a Record Changed My Life feature from Mojo magazine featuring Jon Spencer discussing Fire of Love by Gun Club.
“My musical exploration started here. I can’t say it was a bolt out of the blue, it was sort of a seed that was planted and slowly sprouted and bloomed over the years.
I never thought, “How could these punk musicians do this to this old blues standard?” or “What nerve they have to mangle a guitar in that fashion!” I was a blank sheet of paper, so I took it as it came. It was a real door opening, it gave me a glimpse into this other world of music, of rock’n’roll and the blues, and it showed me you can keep digging and going back and connecting the lines from one band to another. The Gun Club set me on this path. They enriched my life.” – Jon Spencer
The Heavy Trash show referenced in the article was Cafe Nine, New Haven, CT, US (April 17, 2010) with 420 Blackbirds.
Speedball Baby (with Jon Spencer) covered ‘Cool Drink of Water’ for the Gun Club tribute album A Salvo of 24 Gunshots (2005). |
