SLEEVE NOTES: | ||
NIGHT AND DAY We started making this record in the fall of 2006. Here’s what I can remember about it.Sadie was touring with/as Heavy Trash and we had two days off. We booked into the Key Club. Andre was in court the day before the first session and he was facing prison time, which he narrowly avoided. He showed up the first day in Benton Harbor with a small film crew in tow and no bottom plate. He was still uh, partying a lot and had a cold that later turned into pneumonia. We did the first sessions with the fabulous Jon Spencer conducting the group, now augmented by the soulful stylings of Kelly and Sally, courtest of Mike Bulington. It was recorded live off the floor (most times) everyone playing at once.Our beloved Danny showed up the next day and so it was. My memory of the sessions are a little blurry now. Sometimes, I can’t tell whether it’s Travis or Matt on electric, acoustic or baritone guitar. Neither can Travis. The delightful Bill and Jessica patiently recorded us with their Flickinger console. We had Lark’s BBQ. It was good but we were worried for Andre.A couple years later, everything was different. He was sober and sharp. Agile, mobile and hostile. Night and Day. Sadie went back into the Key Club and did some more. It wouldn’t be fair to the new Andre (who I’d never met after working together for like, 12 years) to let the old Andre have this album. So we did even more. Thanks to the great Jon Langford and sobriety, we could finished tracking. Mixing would be another story. It turned out that recording with (as many as) 10 people at once created some technical problems. This record would never have been finished if Don hadn’t achieved the impossible (just to spite me for dmanding it). That’s about it. Oh, one of the lyrics was redone by Andre recently because he forgot about our session and cut the song with someone else. Also, this record was Sadie’s bright idea so no one was properly paid. Thanks to all involved and sorry. Lastly, Andre – I told you we aren’t waiting for you to die before releasing this. |
