Kickass garage rock from Jon Spencer’s other band

Heavy Trash are on their third album, but have too long laboured under the shadow of the parent group, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. That will change with Midnight Soul Serenade, a spine-tinglingly brilliant album of belching rockabilly from Spencer and his analog co-conspirato; Madder Rose’s Matt Verta-Ray.

There’s barely a duff track here, from the talking gothic blues of “The Pill” and the slinky Monks-esque strut of “Isolation”. Top marks, though, go to the pulpit croon of “Sometimes You Got To Be) Gentle”.
