“Rough Trade shops
When the American pioneers set out to find their ‘manifest destiny to over spend the continent’ they were travelling towards a hopeful vision of a billion dollar country. Now the eagles of the west soaring over the land of their great great grandchildren seem to have all turned to buzzards hovering above the corrupt bodies of corporate dinosaurs. But not all these young Americans are prepared to take the decline of the American Dream lying down. They voice their frustration and defiance in an angry noise across the states, joining hands and starting small labels to sell their records directly to their audience. Nirvana of course you know, on the Sub Pop label from Seattle, Helmet on Amphetamine Reptile and Pavement on Drag City. Those who don’t know predict the death of vinyl and the seven-inch single. Here is proof that they are wrong. The Rough Trade Shop has been selling independent singles for fifteen years and are proud to present some of the latest of these fine little records compiled here for your convenience. Special thanks to Todd Morey at Atomic 61 World Industries, Alex at Big Dog Records, Chris Varady at Nocturnal, Rose at 12 Inch Records, Ned Hayden, Mike Hibarger at Sonic Bubblegum, Rose at Sympathy For The Record Industry, Dan K at Drag City, Phil at Cargo, Jimmy Johnson at Forced Exposure, Paul Dordal at Disastro Mix, Lyle Hysen at Keep Your Day Job Management, Ada at Cargo, Simon Rock at Greyhound, John at Caroline, Savage Pencil and a special thanks to Judith, everyone at Rough Trade Shop and John Peel for playing all these wonderful records.” Design by Savage Pencil COVER: American imports from the 7″ singles bins of the Rough Trade Shops [also lists artists]. |
