SLEEVE NOTES / INFORMATION: | |
“Nothing you can say about David ‘Junior’ Kimbrough can prepare people for what they will hear when they listen to his music. Junior’s guitar playing – a churning cauldron of African-derived riffs and drones. It’s a sound that simultaneously suggests mad celebration and terrifying darkness, an endless lifetime of magical possibilities and the apocalyptic foreclosure of any escape from despair A devastatingly charged link back to the deepest, most unruly sources of the blues, that sound was Junior’s alone, and it left this world with him when he died in 1998 at the age of 67.
For decades Junior ran a raucous juke joint near Chulahoma, Mississippi, and all of his albums channel the intensity of that steamy, smouldering environment, he did not even release an album before he was 62; before then, his recorded output was limited to a handful of one off tracks. In the six years before he died, however, Junior made his mark. More important, his mesmerizing, bone-chilling guitar lines, ageless and timeless, continue to make their way out in the world, leaving no one who has heard them at all the same. -Anthony DeCurtis” “Though the world doesn’t need another tribute record, it does need to know about Junior Kimbrough and this is an excellent start. If you would like to hear the original compositions from the man himself, pick up You Better Run, The Essential Junior Kimbrough, also on Fat Possum. And if for some reason you don’t like it, return it directly to us for a refund. – Matthew Johnson” All songs published by Mockingbird Blues administered by Wixen Music (BMI) except 7, 10 and 14 published by Big Legal Mess administered by Wixen Music (BMI).
