PRESS RELEASE: “This is the first release in The Social Registry’s ongoing series aptly titled The Social Club. Dispatched monthly via letter-pressed/limited edition 7-inch vinyl and digital distribution, this series presents a full musical array: the established and the obscured, the noisy and the delicate, the tempered and the experimental.

We are proud to present the debut release from Jena Malone and Her Bloodstains. You might know Jena from her other career acting in film and TV (who could forget her as the little girl on Santa’s lap on Roseanne) but she has now embarked on a different artistic endeavor. Her personal songs are delicate, but also have the elan of someone exploring a musical world with only a rough map. Part of the enchantment is where they end up.

Jena Malone and Her Bloodstains are so new in their creation that a bio seems a little out of place. But alas that is how the world works – we must read about everything and know about everything without ever seeing anything. The origin of the music has to be in South Lake Tahoe where Jena began learning about songwriting on her laptop and recording songs with an MBox. She became obsessed with music and the stories she could tell. After 4 months of writing and recording she had finished 2 demos, one with 8 songs and one with 13 songs. Then, like any good mother after birth, she wanted to clean these things and make them grow and show them to the world. That’s where the band comes in. An amazing group of musicians came together out of love for the songs and also respect for each other as artists: Russell Simins (Blues Explosion), Chris Maxwell (Skeleton Key), Louis Schwadron, Adam Crystal (Dopo Yume) and Jena Malone.” – SocialRegistry.com

EXTRACTS FROM AN INTERVIEW 16 March 2007: (DeadJournalist.com): “Working with Russell Simins (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Butter 08), Louis Schwadron, Chris Maxwell and Adam Crystal, Malone has formed Jena Malone and Her Bloodstains, an experimental collective. Pitchforkmedia.com, in a recent story, described Malone’s vocals as, ” falling somewhere between Scout Niblett and Karen O” but there’s also plenty of of early PJ Harvey (think 1993’s Dry) in her sound.”

“How did you recruit the other members to the band?

JM: Russell and Louis have been my friends for a year or so. A wonderful group of New York artists that I was lucky enough to find when I was working in NY for eight months last year. And Chris and Adam come into the picture through Russell. He introduced me to them and I played them some stuff and we just started playing together. The whole process has felt very organic and not forced.

Are you recording an album? If so, do you have an expected release date?

JM: We are recording an album at the end of April. And I don’t know when it will come out as I am very new at this but I was thinking Fall or Winter.

How would you describe the band’s sound?

I couldn’t. I am the worst at that. It sounds like the inside of my brain is the best description I can come up with.” – deadjournalist.com
