PUSSY GALORE began in the fall of 1985. Based originally in Washington DC, the band consisted of JON SPENCER, JULIA CAFRITZ, NEIL HAGERTY (all three on guitar) and JOHN HAMMILL (drums) with a fifth floating member on metal percussion. Bass was and is eschewed as a clumsy, unnecessary instrument. Two self-released eps, FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOUR BODY and GROOVY HATE FUCK, and a disastrous tour of the south with Wax Trax recording artists PEACH OF IMMORTALITY brought PUSSY GALORE much attention. GROOVY HATE FUCK defined the basic PUSSY GALORE sound: 60’s garage punk meets 80’s industrial pig fuck. The record was a runaway underground success and a surprising college radio hit.

In the summer of 1986 PUSSY GALORE moved to NYC leaving John Hammill behind. A replacement was quickly found in BOB BERT (former SONIC YOUTH drummer and mainman behind BEWITCHED) and with him came the introduction of the modified metal drum kit enabling Bob to do the work of two men and thus solidifying the PUSSY GALORE attack. This attack was made even more powerful with the addition of CRISTINA on fourth guitar. The new PUSSY GALORE was an instant hit with NYC clubgoers and they quickly rose to prominence within the vicious NYC rock scene. At the end of the summer, the band recorded the infamous EXILE ON MAIN STREET cassette and (at Wharton Tier’s Fun City Studios) tracks for the PUSSY GOLD 5000 ep (BUY OUR RECORDS). These two watershed releases were widely acclaimed, firmly establishing PUSSY GALORE as indie superstars. In the fall of ’86 the band toured the midwest after which CRISTINA moved on to join the HONEYMOON KILLERS.

1987 began with PUSSY GALORE appearing on the Uncle Floyd show. Shortly thereafter the band signed with CAROLINE RECORDS and commenced work on their debut lp. After recording a handful of songs with Kramer at the old Noise NY studio, PUSSY GALORE toured the midwest again, stopping in Chicago to finish the lp with STEVE ALBINI. RIGHT NOW, released in September of ’87 was an unequalled triumph, easily fulfilling the promise of PUSSY GALORE’s earlier records. NEIL HAGERTY quit the group in April ’87 to start his own band ROYAL TRUX. KURT WOLF became the band’s new lead guitarist and PUSSY GALORE became an even tighter live act with an even harder edge. In September of ’87 the band released a compilation of the three earlier eps on JOHN ROBB’s (MEMBRANES) VINYL DRIP label. The compilation entitled “GROOVY HATE FUCK” and is available in the U.K. and Europe and in this country as an import. In January of ’88, after yet another tour of the states, PUSSY GALORE made their debut in Europe to rave reviews. In the spring of ’88 the band released a full length live video on Atavistic Video as well as being featured on SNUB TV (USA Cable Network)

Over the summer of ’88 PUSSY GALORE recorded their ep “SUGARSHIT SHARP” STEVE ALBINI and WHARTON TIERS. The release was originally held up due to legal problems with the record’s original jacket art. In October the band became the first U.S. indie band to tour Japan. Upon their return to the U.S. they played shows on the West Coast for the first time to an amazing response. A second European tour took place in November of ’88 at the close of which they began work on their latest album “DIAL M FOR MOTHERFUCKER”. On their return to the states the band replaced JULIA CAFRITZ with one time member NEIL HAGERTY and completed recording.

DIAL M while retaining the original sound of PG in many ways proves more polished and “accessible” than previous releases. Case in point is the track “DICK JOHNSON” which even features a hooky chorus!

If you felt you had this amazing band pigeon-holed, think again and listen to this album!
