Lyrics > Ram Jam – Black Betty

Writers: Huddie Ledbetter
Published: Kensington Music Limited
Release: Ram Jam – Black Betty (7″, UK)
Transcribed: Pop Catastrophe
Notes: This is the most well-known rock arrangement of the song by Ram Jam. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion recorded a cover of this track (RELEASE / LYRICS) which was used in the 2011 Volkswagen Superbowl advert and released as a split 7″ single with the Melvins and on the No Reservations 7″ single. Although the earliest known recording is by James Iron Head Baker and Group (1933) the JSBX version has more in common with the Leadbelly adaption (RELEASE / LYRICS).
Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
Black Betty had a child
[Bam-a-lam]
The damn thing gone wild
[Bam-a-lam]
Said it weren’t none of mine
[Bam-a-lam]
The Damn thing gone blind
[Bam-a-lam]
I said Oh, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]

Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
You’re gonna get me high
[Bam-a-lam]
You know that’s no lie
[Bam-a-lam]
She’s so rock steady
[Bam-a-lam]
And she’s always ready
[Bam-a-lam]
Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]

Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
She’s from Birmingham
[Bam-a-lam]
Way down in Alabam’
[Bam-a-lam]
Well, she’s shakin’ that thing
[Bam-a-lam]
Boy, she makes me sing
[Bam-a-lam]
Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
Whoa, Black Betty
[Bam-a-lam]
