The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion cover of Black Betty was recorded whilst the band were on tour in Australia at Linear Recording, Sydney.
The standard version of the record was first sold during the April/May 2011 US tour dates.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion version of the track was originally recorded for use in a Volkswagen advert broadcast during Super Bowl XLV on 6th February 2011.
Although the earliest known recording is by James Iron Head Baker and Group (1933) the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion version (LYRICS / RELEASE) has more in common with the Leadbelly adaption (LYRICS / RELEASE) and the most famous rock arrangement is by Ram Jam (LYRICS / RELEASE).
Black Betty was also released as a split single with the Melvins on Amphetimine Reptile records available as Tri-Color vinyl, Splatter Vinyl and in ten different hand-printed sleeves (also on Tri-Color vinyl):
