1988: Pussy Galore – Big Kahuna (New Music Seminar), New York City, NY, US

“Pussy Galore, one of New York’s best bands and a group likely to stay on the the underground circuit because of the harshness of its music, will be performing.”

The Galore group, which will be performing tomorrow at Big Kahuna, has been playing together for three years and is one of the New York scene’s main attractions. Its latest album, “Right Now!” (Caroline), seethes with frustration with the formal and cultural confines of rock. And though the group has been well received critically, the band, with its wild, almost abstracted rock riffing, doesn’t have much of a chance to go beyond the underground audience.

“We’ll never be mainstream,” said Jon Spencer, the band’s lead singer and guitarist. “From the word go-the name isn’t exactly salable – it’s not what we’re about. It’s not what we aspire to. We’re not in it for a job. If that happens, that’s fine.”

“I play music because it makes me feel good,” Mr. Spencer said, “and I hope an audience shares in my joy. I hope there is something left to do in rock, but it doesn’t really seem like it. It would be great if something really wild happened, but now, rock is all references. It seems like rock is totally gone, co-opted. But what isn’t? It’s hard to do anything natural, because you are going up against 30 years of rock and 5 years of beer commercials using rock; a rock-and-roll sensibility seems to be lost.

There’s no way out: once you’ve picked a guitar, you are part of the whole thing.” – Malhar Ferguson – New York Times / “Alternative Is the Word At Festival”
